Our Winemakers
To date, Llama Wines is working with two winemakers in the Tarija Valley. Both were chosen because of their high quality wines and their love for their native Bolivia.
Campos de Solana
Premier Wines
Campos de Solana is one of Bolivia’s premier winemakers. It is a modern and welcoming winery known for the quality of its wines and beautiful vineyards. The team at Campos de Solana was the first winery to sign on with Llama wines and through this first year, we have built a strong relationship.
Known for their award-winning wine, “Esther Ortiz,” Campos de Solana also produces other perfectly-crafted blends, unique in their style and composition. Among these are their “Bi” and “Tri” wines, which vary in terms of varietal year to year based on harvest and quality. This results every year in beautifully expressive bottlings owing to the winemakers’ skills.
The Terroir
Campos de Solana’s wines are grown in one of the highest elevation wine regions in the world. Its vineyards are located at more than 1850 meters and receive more sun than in traditional wine latitudes. Therefore the grapes have a greater flavor and aroma. To this unmatched natural resource, Campos de Solana adds the dedication of its winemakers and technology that has led the winery to be distinguished as one of the leading modern winemakers in South America.
The Accolades
Thanks to Tarija’s ideal environment, the quality of Campos de Solana wines is internationally recognized from its numerous honors and medals in important competitions such as the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles. The wines stand out as one of the 20 best Latin American wines.
The high altitude, the thermal amplitude between day and night, the high luminosity and the purity of the environment of Tarija make it an extremely well-suited viticultural area.
Campos de Solana’s team works to demonstrate that the characteristics of this wine growing region, accompanied by technological innovation, build the framework to produce world-class wines.
Sustainability and Innovation
Campos de Solana’s work in the vineyards includes the recovery of eroded lands, the selection and investigation of varieties, the implementation of drip irrigation, and manual harvesting.
Compared to other more traditional wine-growing regions, Tarija’s altitude and environment allow the winemakers to concentrate on the finer points of the viticultural process. Besides sustainability, Campos de Solana’s staff focuses on innovation through technology and oenological practices. This includes microvinifications and newly developed vine cuts that consistently achieve a perfectly balanced result.
Cruce del Zorro
Setting a New Standard for Bolivian Wine
Cruce del Zorro is on a mission to bring Bolivian wine to the world stage. Through the partnership with Llama Wines, Cruce del Zorro is making its first venture into an export market.
As producers of small batches of premium wines, they are focused on revealing the best our country has to offer through collaboration with local farmers and the highest degree of passion and care in their work.
Crafted in the Mountains of Tarija
A relatively new winery, Bodega Cruce del Zorro was born in 2015 in Concepción Valley, Tarija.
The team of winemakers, local producers, and farmers is accompanied by internationally-renowned agronomists and wine experts, resulting in a group with more than four generations of winemaking experience spanning Australia, Argentina, Bolivia, and Oregon.
A Commitment to Sustainability, the Community & the Grapes
The “Touching the Sky” program was inspired by successful Bolivian coffee enterprises with the goal of helping and connecting farmers at a local level in the south of Bolivia.
The promise is to construct a collaborative network that helps the local producers prosper, obtain sustainable profits, and learn valuable financial and agronomic skills. Above all, Cruce del Zorro encourages them to protect the most important treasure of our industry – the grapes.
